Call and Response Live, with Larry Achiampong

Join us for Call and Response, an online artist advice surgery that Larry Achiampong has been delivering via Instagram.

Designed as a space for creatives to seek guidance, share experiences, and navigate the complexities of the art world, this session invites artists at all stages to submit their questions in advance through an online form, whether about art school, career progression, or the broader creative landscape.

Join the conversation, exchange knowledge, and build collective strategies to tackle the disparities and challenges that shape artistic journeys. A partnership between MAIA and Grand Union.

Larry Achiampong (born 1984, London) works in film, sculpture, installation, sound, collage, music and performance. Drawing on popular culture and his communal and personal heritage, his work explores post-colonial and post-digital identity, and the deeply entrenched inequalities in contemporary society.

Access

Unfortunately, Grand Union is not a wheelchair accessible venue.
If you have any other access needs that we can support you with to attend the event comfortably, please let us know via the Access Request Form.

ART SCHOOL Day 1

10:00 am10:00

ART SCHOOL Day 1

ART SCHOOL is one of the ways that MAIA leads enquiries into topics that affect the organisation and the local community. Through prompts and the free-use of materials, we ask participants to respond to themes that can catapult our understanding of the issues facing Ladywood, and the world, into a collective state. This is a site for transformation, weaving our personal imaginations and offerings into the design and making of ABUELOS.

This will be followed by an OPEN HOUSE, which will give attendees the opportunity to connect with one another, use YARD how they wish and eat with us.

ROUND 1:

Prompt: ABUELOS initial architectural plan

Question: We’re creating ABUELOS as a community infrastructure, alive with the artists and cultural workers that make it their home from home.

  • How would you envision a cultural space where you can be your best creative self?

  • What spaces would enable your creativity to flourish? What do they look, feel, sound, smell and taste like?

Choose a medium:

  • A series of drawings / collages

  • An annotated architectural plan

  • A song or poem

  • A zine

Themes: Architectural, Material, Artists
